What is Memory Foam?

 Memory Foam is a direct result of space-age technology. It was first developed in the 1960’s. It was originally used to cushion and deflect the tremendous effects of gravitational pull experienced by our astronauts during take off and re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere.

Then, the memory foam started being used to cushion and comfort patients within hospital critical care units. It has also provided outstanding benefits to persons “bed ridden” for many reasons. As it became more popular, other industries started implementing visco-elastic memory foam into: cushions, beds, car seats and many more products.

Memory Foam cells change shape when under “pressure or a “load.” Unlike standard foam, which compresses and then quickly wants to spring back (or recover) quickly to its original state, memory foam cells compress totally and thus, spread their air pressure to the adjoining cells.

This accounts for the way that memory foam actually reduces pressure points via its ability to change shape slowly and shape what lies on top.

Memory foam is also temperature sensitive. Because memory foam is temperature sensitive, the foam makes you feel as though you are “melting” into it as you sit or lie down on the product.

However, when a person lies down on the foam, it reacts to the body’s temperature and then cradles the body in support and comfort. A person’s body weight is thus “evenly” distributed; alleviating pressure points and allowing the body to lie in a more ergonomically correct position.
