Baby Sleep Positioners - Why

Baby Sleep Positioners - Why You Should Use One

SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the major cause of death in infants from 1 month to 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months.  Using a baby sleep positioner can help to greatly reduce the risk of SIDS by keeping your baby positioned on it’s back, the safest position as determined by the American Academy of Pediatricians.

Basically, baby sleep positioners are a cushion or pillow with bumpers or wedges attached on each side to prevent your baby from rolling onto its belly.  However, there are several different types that are available for different scenarios.  In general, baby sleep positioners comfort your baby and can help your baby sleep through the night.  They will feel safe and secure while swaddled in their sleep positioner.

Baby sleep positioners can be used for as long as your baby will fit in them.  As a general rule, you should discontinue use when your baby can roll on to its belly without assistance.

Baby Sleep Wedges - These products are mainly for babies who suffer from apnea, congestion, or reflux.  They are placed at your baby’s head end and elevate your babies head and chest.  This helps to prevent acid reflux and promotes better digestion and easier breathing.

Baby Sleep Pillow / Head Support - These are usually made of a very soft material such as memory foam.  They relieve pressure on your babies head and the back of the skull.  The main purpose for these is to prevent the flat spot that some babies get on the back of their head as a result of sleeping on their backs so much.

Combinations - There are several types of combinations of baby sleep positioners.  Some incorporate the standard positioner with a wedge, others incorporate a wedge and head support together.  Whatever your situation, you should be able to find a positioner to create the safest and most comfortable environment for yourself and your little one.

Other Features to Consider

Besides choosing which type of sleep positioner you want to use, there are other choices you will need to make when purchasing. Here are some options that I have seen available along with some personal recommendations.

Cushioning - The cushioning needs to be firm enough to keep your baby from burying their face in, but soft enough to be comfortable.  The most popular type of cushion available is memory foam.

Pillow/Cushion Cover - You will want to make sure that your sleep positioner comes with a cover or has covers available for it.  The cover should be removable and machine washable so you can launder it as necessary.  I would recommend 100% cotton covers since they are soft, durable, and easy to wash.

Other options available include heartbeat monitors and special designs to improve airflow and make it easier for baby to breathe.  These features could also help to prevent SIDS or maybe just for peace of mind.

In conclusion, I feel that using a baby sleep positioner is an excellent choice to keep your baby in the recommended safest sleeping position.  Whether you decide to use a baby sleep positioner or not, you should always follow the recommended safe sleeping practices as recommended by your pediatrician or healthcare professional.
